Notifications and app updates
Turn school notifications on or off in JPX Parent and JPX Staff, make sure they arrive when the app is closed, and keep the app up to date.
JPX Parent and JPX Staff tell you when something changes at school: a new notice, a ConnectX message, new homework or a change to your records. While the app is open, a banner appears and the bell in the header counts what is new. With notifications allowed, the phone also shows alerts when the app is closed. This guide also covers how the app tells you about a newer version.
Before you start#
For the office app's Push notifications switch and Notifications inbox, see More in JPX School ERP. The steps below apply to Parent and Staff.
- You are signed in to JPX Parent or JPX Staff.
- Notifications must be allowed for the app in your phone's settings.
Turn notifications on or off#
- Tap More.
- Turn on Notifications (Show school updates as they happen).
- If the phone asks for permission to show notifications, allow it.
To stop notifications, turn the same switch off. The school then stops alerting this phone.
Make sure alerts arrive when the app is closed (Android)#
Many Android phones hold back alerts from closed apps to save battery. The app checks this for you.
- Tap More.
- Look at the Alerts when the app is closed row:
- ON — the phone allows notifications for the app.
- ALLOW — battery saving is limiting the app. Tap the row.
- OFF — notifications are turned off in Android settings. Tap the row.
- Tap Open settings and follow the advice the app shows for your phone.
The advice differs by phone maker. Typical settings are:
| Phone maker | Setting to change |
|---|---|
| Samsung | Battery › Unrestricted |
| Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO | Turn on Autostart, then set Battery saver to No restrictions |
| OPPO, realme, OnePlus | Battery usage › allow background activity, and Auto launch if shown |
| vivo, iQOO | Battery › allow high background power use; turn on Autostart if shown |
| Huawei, Honor | Launch › Manage manually, then turn on Auto-launch and Run in background |
| Others | Battery › Unrestricted (or Don't optimise) |
Below it, the Instant push registration row shows whether this phone is registered with the school for alerts. If it says the registration failed, tap Retry.
See what is new inside the app#
- Tap the bell (Updates) in the header. It lists new notices, messages and record changes, newest first. Tap an item to open it.
- A banner appears at the bottom when something arrives while you are in the app. Tap Open to go to it.
- Unread ConnectX messages show as a count on the ConnectX tab and on each conversation.
Keep the app up to date#
The app checks for a newer version when it starts and from time to time after that.
- When a new version is ready, a card appears on Home, for example "JPX Parent 3.9.0 is available".
- Tap Update. If you installed the app from Google Play, the Google Play page opens. Update from there.
- To check yourself, tap More › Check for app update. The app says You have the latest version. or shows the version that is available.
Good to know#
- Signing out (locking the app) does not stop notifications. Removing the account from the phone does.
- A notification tells you that something has changed. Open the app to read the full details from the school.
- Notification previews can appear on the lock screen. On a shared phone, use your phone's privacy settings to hide previews.
- The update card is only a notice. The app keeps working until you update.
Troubleshooting#
| Symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| No alerts when the app is closed | Check More › Alerts when the app is closed and follow the advice. Also check that Notifications is on. |
| Notifications switch turns itself off | The phone refused permission. Allow notifications for the app in the phone's settings, then turn the switch on again. |
| Alerts arrive only when you open the app | Battery saving is holding the app back. Set the app's battery use to unrestricted. |
| Instant push registration shows a failure | Check your internet connection and tap Retry. |
| The update card keeps showing after updating | Close the app fully and open it again. Then tap More › Check for app update. |
