Recovery codes
What sign-in recovery codes are, how to store them safely, how to use one, and how to make a new set.
When you turn on the second sign-in step in School ERP, you are given a set of recovery codes. Each code works once, in place of the code from your authenticator app, so you can still sign in if your phone is lost, broken or not with you. They are shown only once, so save them the moment they appear.
Save your codes#
- When the Recovery codes window opens after you turn on the second step, stop and save the codes before doing anything else.
- Select Download as a text file to save them, or write them down by hand.
- Store them away from your phone, in one of these ways:
- printed or written on paper, kept in a locked drawer or the school safe;
- in a password manager that you, and only you, can open;
- on a USB drive kept somewhere secure.
- Delete any extra copy from the computer's Downloads folder once you have stored it safely.
- Select I have saved these codes.
Sign in with a recovery code#
- Sign in with your Login ID and password as usual.
- When the Second sign-in step window asks for a code, type one of your recovery codes in Six-digit code or recovery code.
- Select Verify and sign in.
- Cross that code off your list. It will not work again.
After a recovery-code sign-in, a message tells you how many codes you have left.
Make a new set#
Make new codes when you are running low, when you think someone may have seen them, or after you set up a new phone.
- Select the shield icon next to your name at the bottom of the sidebar (Sign-in security). It shows how many recovery codes you have left.
- Select Make new recovery codes.
- Type your password and select Make new codes.
- Save the new codes in the same careful way. The old set stops working as soon as the new one is made.
Good to know#
- Sign-in recovery codes are different from the recovery code in your licence activation details. That one is for activating or re-installing the product; keep it with your activation e-mail.
- If you lose both your phone and your recovery codes, a staff user should ask the school administrator to reset the second step. The administrator should see Forgotten password.
