Use a desktop or phone mail app
Set up Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail or another mail app with the server details shown in your Settings.
Besides the webmail and the JPX Mail app, you can use a standard mail app such as Outlook, Thunderbird or Apple Mail. The server names to use are shown in your own Settings, so always copy them from there.
Before you start#
- Your full e-mail address and your mailbox password.
- Sign in to the webmail and open Settings › Mail apps. Keep this page open while you set up the app.
Find your server details#
- In the webmail, open Settings.
- Select Mail apps in the column beside the page.
- Note the details shown under Incoming mail (IMAP) and Outgoing mail (SMTP): Server, Port, Security and Username.
The standard settings look like this. Use the exact server names from your Settings page.
| Setting | Incoming mail (IMAP) | Outgoing mail (SMTP) |
|---|---|---|
| Server | As shown in Settings › Mail apps | As shown in Settings › Mail apps |
| Port | As shown (usually 993) | 587 |
| Security | As shown (usually SSL/TLS) | STARTTLS |
| Username | Your full e-mail address | Your full e-mail address |
| Password | Your mailbox password | Your mailbox password |
Set up the app#
- In your mail app, choose to add an account, and pick the manual or advanced set-up (not automatic).
- Choose IMAP as the account type.
- Enter the incoming server, port and security from Settings › Mail apps.
- Enter the outgoing (SMTP) server, port 587 and STARTTLS.
- For both, use your full e-mail address as the username and your mailbox password.
- Turn on authentication for the outgoing server ("My outgoing server requires authentication"), using the same username and password.
- Save, and send yourself a test message.
Good to know#
- If Settings › Mail apps shows only Outgoing mail (SMTP), read your mail in the webmail or the JPX Mail app. You can still send from a mail app with the SMTP details.
- Messages you send from a mail app are also kept in Sent in the webmail, and count towards your organisation's messages a day.
- When you change your mailbox password, update it in every mail app too.
- On Android, the JPX Mail app is the simplest option. See The JPX Mail app.
Troubleshooting#
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The app says the password is wrong | Sign in to the webmail with the same password to check it. Use the full e-mail address as the username. |
| Sending fails with an authentication error | Turn on authentication for the outgoing server, with the same username and password. |
| Sending fails with a security or connection error | Check the port is 587 and security is STARTTLS, and that the server name matches Settings › Mail apps exactly. |
| Sending is refused with a message about the daily sending limit | Your organisation has used its messages for today. Try tomorrow, or ask your administrator. |
| Sending is refused because there is not enough storage for the Sent copy | Free space in your mailbox. See Storage, plans and buying more. |
